Summary:
Riley is the chief financial officer of Salt International (SI), a financial conglomerate that has multi-billion Euro shareholdings in a number of banks and insurance companies. Pepper Bank (PB) is its primary investment and its greatest challenge. Through the perspective of Riley, this Data Challenge documents efforts by some agents to circumvent banking regulation, thus threatening the very existence of Salt International and all its subsidiaries. The unfolding story offers a first-hand account of events over a six-month period that leads up to European Union (EU) regulator intervention, loss of investor confidence, and a breakdown in the conduct of executives charged with protecting the interests of shareholders and creditors. Students investigate what went wrong and how, or if, unfolding failures could have been avoided. The goal is to learn from mistakes made through analysis of financial data and first-hand accounts.
