- Summary:
- Privately funded space exploration start-up companies, such as Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, have made giant strides in efforts to send humans to other planets. However, both companies built expendable launch vehicles (ELVs), which are used only once. Typically, the rocket has been the most expensive component in the preparation of a space trip. Luna Shams, SpaceX's senior operations manager, and the company's research and development (R&D) team had been working on developing a reusable rocket, Falcon 9, to reduce the cost of spaceflights. For a price, SpaceX was planning on conveying civilians to outer space, the moon, and even Mars. The Falcon 9 market testing phase was completed in 2023, and product launch (commercialization) was set for 2024. Luna was responsible for devising a pricing plan for the next 7 years to maximize profits. The stakes for SpaceX couldn't be higher. Luna's recommendations to Elon Musk and the board of directors could determine not only the future of the company but possibly that of the entire space tourism and travel industry. Although the organizations, websites, and products mentioned in this Data Challenge are real, the Luna Shams character and the figures and charts are fictional. Before attempting the Data Challenge, students should be familiar with the 4Ps of marketing-product, price, place, promotion-plus segmentation, targeting, and positioning.
