Summary:
In this Data Challenge, students use project management techniques to schedule the activities of a landscaping project, allocate resources, estimate uncertainty, and evaluate ways to expedite the project. During an initial analysis, students use the program evaluation and review technique as well as critical path method, creating a PERT/CPM networkand a Gantt chart to determine the length of the project. Thereafter, students deal with uncertainty in the project by calculating the probability of completing the project at a particular time. Three-point estimates are used to assess the probability of meeting different completion dates. Optionally, a Monte Carlo simulation can be used for this purpose. Later, students are presented with alternative ways to crash the project (i.e., expediting the project completion for the least incremental cost by adding resources to it). In this Data Challenge, students take on the role of one of the business owners. They analyze the data to discuss with their partner whether to take on the project and, if so, how to proceed.
