- Summary:
- When Moltbook came out and people were freaking out, Harper Carroll shared a wonderful video where she herself seemed visibly shaken by the stories that were emerging but then proceeded to explain in computer science terms what was really going on and why people should take a breath. That ability to make AI relatable is one of Harper's superpowers, confirmed by her hundreds of thousands of followers across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and beyond. Tim O'Reilly was one of those viewers of Harper's Moltbook post, and he was quite touched by her composed, informative response. For this episode, he's invited Harper to join him for a conversation all about teaching AI over social media, and what we can learn from the massive popularity of that content. Harper describes herself as "born an actress from Manhattan," and that performer's poise comes through in her videos. But she's also an ML expert who, among other accomplishments, developed a system to detect and mitigate misinformation ahead of the 2020 US presidential election at Facebook that was then applied globally. Harper and Tim will cover her professional evolution from actor to engineer to a public figure who embodies the best of both, and explore how her communication style reflects that mixture of performance craft, technical capability, and pedagogical instinct. But they'll also get into how her experiences at Meta and Brev.dev have informed her perspective on AI education, why Harper sees the content she creates as helping to democratize AI, the reason she thinks people need to expand their conception of AI, and much more.
