- Summary:
- The European Commission (E.C.) has introduced the Digital Product Passport (DPP) to promote sustainable and circular textile and clothing within the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) framework. The DPP is an innovative tool that offers easy access to digital information about a product's environmental impact throughout its life cycle. Announced in 2024, DPPs are anticipated to be adopted by the European Union (E.U.) and mandated between 2026 and 2030. This means every textile or fashion product for sale in the European Union will need a DPP by 2030. Implementing the DPP challenges fashion brands and stakeholders across the value chain, including raw material suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. However, the delays in implementing the DPP have led fashion brands to miss compliance deadlines or face substantial additional costs. Fashion brands must act now by initiating data gathering and DPP-tooling solutions such as blockchain-based DPP. The case is written to help students explore how to implement DPPs in the fashion industry by reviewing the real-life examples of Aura Blockchain Consortium and its fashion brands member, Tod's.
