Summary:

Grifols is a Spanish-based pharmaceutical and chemical company that is a leading blood-plasma company. It is one of several companies that collect plasma along the United States-Mexico border. However, in 2021, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) argued that Mexicans require a work visa to donate plasma for payment. This decision disrupted the plasma supply for plasma companies such as Grifols and cut the revenues received by needy Mexicans for their plasma donations. CSL Plasma Inc., another plasma company, filed a lawsuit in response to the ban. A temporary injunction was granted that allowed donations by Mexicans to continue. The injunction meant that CBP could not require work visas of the Mexican plasma donors. Grifols has 51 plasma collection centers in Texas, some of which are along the international border (Grifols, 2024a). Students will be asked to propose action plans for companies that collect plasma from Mexicans along the United States-Mexico border.
