- Summary:
- Reporting the news is important and doing it objectively is crucial. However, that can become complicated because every person, journalists included, has preferences, opinions, and biases. Regardless, it is vital that journalists strive to remain unaffected by them. This case directly addresses the issue, with students being introduced to Rachel, a TV news producer in Texas. Rachel, in real time, is processing a failed proposal by the Southern Baptist Convention to ban churches with women pastors. As she struggles to maintain her emotions, she conveys to her executive producer that she is not putting the story in her newscast, much to his disagreement. As the rest of the newsroom prepares to move forward with the story, Rachel continues fighting back. Students will be asked to reflect on news value and how to effectively separate personal opinions and biases from objective reporting.
