Summary:

A routine review of expense reports by the Internal Audit Department at Zip Tech Corporation inadvertently uncovered a workplace romance between a senior executive and a lower-ranked employee. Zip Tech had a Conflict of Interest policy and a Code of Conduct, and the two employees admitted that they had violated those policies. The Internal Audit Department, Legal Department, and the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) were involved in the investigation and decisions. The CHRO asked the Internal Audit and Legal departments for recommendations and became frustrated when their responses ranged from "it is not part of our department's responsibilities" to "simply follow the pertinent company policies." Since it appeared to be a straightforward violation of the company's policies, the CHRO fired the senior executive but reprimanded the lower-ranked employee. The case ends with the CHRO preparing her monthly report for the CEO in which she will need to justify her decisions. Readers are asked to assess the actions of Zip Tech decision-makers and the legal and ethical issues associated with the decision, and how decisions might have been better made. This descriptive case is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate courses in human resource management, management, employment law, business policy, and ethics.
