- Summary:
- This management-consulting-framed case introduces students to the complexities of pricing strategies within the utilities sector, particularly focusing on broadband and mobile phones in the telecommunications sector. Jay (they/them) is a freshly minted graduate from a leading business school and has started working at Ravens-King Consulting, a small management consultancy practice based in the U.K. They have been asked to undertake some preliminary background pricing model research ahead of an initial client meeting with a new telecom entrant. All that was known about the client was that it was a purposeful startup, keen to differentiate itself using sustainability dimensions as a brand new entrant in the broadband and mobile utilities space. Undertaking desktop and office-based research to address a list of questions, Jay needed to collect useful qualitative stories from colleagues and blend them with some screen-scraped (lifted from web pages) competitor pricing tables to then develop an initial briefing presentation deck for their boss, Vikay, in just two days. Acting in Jay's management consultancy role, students will need to use the qualitative insights gleaned from the first-person conversation transcript combined with the various quantitative data summaries (Tables 1-7 in the Supplementary Resources) Jay created to address the case questions.
