- Summary:
- GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is a major international pharmaceutical company based in the United Kingdom. In 2013, GSK experienced a corruption scandal for illegal marketing activities in China. The case explores corruption outsourcing, in which third parties were used to evade detection and accountability. In its Chinese operations, GSK faced cultural, regulatory, and market challenges. As a result of the scandal, GSK faced legal, financial, and reputational consequences at a global level. Based on the insights gained from the GSK scandal, the case highlights lessons for multinational corporations (MNCs) in detecting and preventing corruption in high-risk markets. The case also provides practical implications for global business ethics, compliance, and the complexities of international business. Students will be asked to deal with an important ethical dilemma (corruption outsourcing) that may negatively affect multinational companies operating in a global business environment.
