At the start of 2023, the Adani Group of India was one of the largest infrastructure companies in the country. The group ran businesses in ports, airports, mining, and renewable energy, with projects operating on various continents. Gautam Adani, the Chairman of the group, was well-known among the political leadership in various countries and was one of the wealthiest people in the world. On November 20, 2024, the U.S. Court indicted Gautam Adani and seven other senior officials of the Adani Group for conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud, giving false and misleading information to investors and financial institutions, and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Furthermore, a New York judge issued arrest warrants for Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. Although the group quickly refuted the charges as baseless, there were sharp falls in company share prices and doubts about the future and viability of many of its very large deals in various countries. Students will be asked to assess the reputational crisis and business implications for the Adani Group. Students will then debate and discuss potential crisis management strategies to arrive at a course of action for the Adani Group and the Government of India.
