- In June 2023, Irene and Peter Hansen were young professionals who had outgrown their current apartment. Although they agreed on the need for more space, they had to decide whether to continue renting or to buy their first home. If they opted to buy, they would have to choose among homes at different price points. This case provides a setting in which to apply a buy-versus-rent financial analysis within the life-cycle model of consumption framework. It also demonstrates the need for a qualitative analysis of the home-ownership decision.
