Summary:
This case is a descriptive critical incident that serves as the basis for discussions about organizational power, politics, and conflict management. This critical incident centers on three middle managers (university department heads) who have been tasked with collaboratively writing a job description for their immediate supervisor (the school dean) for which they cannot resolve a fundamental dispute about academic qualifications. The situation also involves suspicion of bias and disagreement about what role senior leadership (the university provost) should play in the process. The respective involved parties all feel that their stances are principled and necessary, but they also are contributing to the problem. The critical incident described in this case presents the learner with an uncomfortable and disorienting organizational scenario in which the course of action for the members is not clear. The setting for this incident is a university, but familiarity with higher education, while potentially helpful, is not necessary. The scenario presented is general enough to allow applicability to any organization with multiple layers of management. This critical incident is suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in organizational behavior, organizational development, management, or organizational or higher education leadership.
