- Summary:
- Since 2023, the widespread use of OpenAI's ChatGPT has resulted in a technology race between Meta, Google, and Microsoft, generating millions in funding for AI development that now involves image and video generators alongside text generators. In late 2024, DeepSeek V3 was released, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by DeepSeek, a startup from China. DeepSeek V3 revealed the possibility of developing AI platforms with significantly less funding. DeepSeek focused strongly on research and development before commercialization, working with several of the top-tier universities in China on efficient model techniques that contributed to reducing overall costs. This case study examines DeepSeek's open-source business model and how it differs from competitors such as ChatGPT and Grok. Analyzing DeepSeek's business model will help students understand how using unique business models can be crucial for innovation and facilitate better business outcomes.
