- Summary:
- Currently, 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, and global plastic production is expected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. Consequently, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century, with severe consequences for human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. There is also a link between plastic production and climate change, as plastics are derived from fossil fuels and their production and disposal contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need for sustainable alternatives to respond to this crisis. The seaweed-based packaging developed by the firm Notpla offers a promising solution, aiming to replace conventional plastic with biodegradable and even edible materials. This case encourages students to assess the environmental impacts of plastic production and consumption, evaluate sustainable alternatives, and explore how innovation can drive sustainability in business practices.
