Currently, 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, and global plastic production is expected to reach 1,100 million tons by 2050. Consequently, plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century, with severe consequences for human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. There is also a link between plastic production and climate change, as plastics are derived from fossil fuels and their production and disposal contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
