- This case examines the issues surrounding working with difficult people. It considers the case of Steve Jobs (1955-2011), who was the co-founder and former chief executive officer (CEO) of the world-famous corporation Apple Inc. For many people who worked with him, and for many others who observed and read about him, he was one of the most creative and innovative individuals they had ever known (Elliot, 2012). He could also be charismatic and charming and very agreeable company - especially when he was working towards a desired goal (Niebuhr et al., 2016). However, for other employees and associates, Steve Jobs apparently had a darker and more concerning side to his character (Conger, 1990). It was reported that he could be very unpleasant, rude, arrogant, and dismissive (Bilton, 2015) or scheming and manipulative (Smith, 2016). Some people would characterise Steve Jobs' behaviours as Machiavellian (scheming, manipulative), or narcissistic (self-absorbed, selfish) or even psychopathic (lacking empathy and compassion) (Hamilton, 2017). In recent decades, these three behaviours have come to be termed as the Dark Triad. They comprise three personality types/behaviours which can potentially have very negative effects on people in organisations and institutions and human society in general.Overall, the case materials point at, and underline, the danger, impacts, consequences, and potential responses that can be produced by Dark Triad behaviours. It also signals that such occurrences may not be as infrequent as might be thought or desired. The case and accompanying teaching notes provide discussion points and present the challenges, problems, and insights into ways of potentially coping with people like Steve Jobs and Dark Triad situations when they are encountered in organisational settings.
