- Summary:
- Getir has dramatically expanded beyond Turkey to major European cities, including London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris. With the additional accelerating effect of the global pandemic, it rapidly transformed into an 'ultra-fast' grocery shopping company in major urban centres. The company also boldly moved into the U.S. market, where established players like GoPuff and Uber Eats operated. However, this super-swift growth came at a cost. The company had to retreat from key international markets due to regulatory challenges, high operational costs, sudden shifts in consumer behavior, and intense competition by 2024, leading to a loss of USD 1.3 billion in venture capital investments (Pratty & Smith, 2024). This case study investigates Getir's extraordinary rise in global markets and delves into the global and local forces that shaped its trajectory and the challenges that ultimately forced its retreat. This case combines Dynamic Capabilities (Teece et al., 1997) and Institutional Theory (Scott, 1995) as frameworks to explore the complexities of Getir's international growth and sustainable operations in different countries. The case encourages students to analyze key strategic factors in global expansion, including rapid scaling, regulatory preparedness, and market adaptation. Students will also assess the impact of labor laws and government policies on gig economy businesses.
