Summary:
This case encourages students to apply stakeholder theory to NBA superstar LeBron James' partaking in a live TV program to announce which team he would sign with during free agency. "The Decision" aired live in prime time on ESPN in Summer 2010 as more than 13 million viewers watched James conclude arguably the most public free agency in NBA history when he announced he was signing with the Miami Heat. While the show lasted 75 minutes, it was the product of months of planning, between ESPN and James' business partner, agent, and others in his inner circle. And while "The Decision" itself was a success in producing outstanding ratings and generating millions of dollars for charities, James' choice of how to announce his decision-and the decision itself-was scrutinized and instantly made him one of the most hated players in the NBA to many fans. Through this case, students will examine "The Decision" through the lens of stakeholder theory and consider how it impacted James' legacy and brand both short and long term.
