Summary:
Founded in 1995 in California, eBay is now a cross-border e-commerce giant. This case is located at eBay's China Center of Excellence (CCOE) where senior engineer Paul led a team of temporary employees to complete eBay's system migration project. Despite such a daunting task, Paul's team consisted only of alternative workforce (AWF) with inadequate technical and professional skills. From the selection of the team members to their management, Paul adopted the role of a typical paternalistic leader with a strict but caring management style. Following the first six months of the adjustment period, this temporary team completed the task as expected within two years, achieving great success. By elaborating how Paul took on responsibility for the team and successfully completed the task, this case aims to provide some insights into employee motivation.
