Summary:
WeRide, founded in 2017, is a technology company specializing in autonomous driving with focus on Level-4 (L4) autonomous driving technology and its commercialization. The company had carried out its autonomous driving research and development (R&D), testing, and operations in 25 cities worldwide, including San Jose, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Unlike many technology entrepreneurs, WeRide's founder, Xu Han, had emphasized feasibility and commercialization of the technology right from the start. WeRide pioneered the Iron Triangle operational model in the industry, collaborating with diverse partners to successively introduce vehicles such as Robotaxi, Mini Robobus, Robovan, and Robo Street Sweeper. As the company grew, the R&D management team adjusted in terms of composition and outcome evaluation. As the autonomous driving industry expanded, national and local governments had introduced favorable policies to support industrial development. With increasing participants in the industry, WeRide, as one of the pioneers, faced increasingly fierce competition, creating an urgent need for large-scale commercialization. WeRide, as a mainstream technology module supplier in the automotive industry, should it sell its autonomous driving vehicles directly to consumers, or focus solely on being a key supplier in the automotive supply chain as an autonomous driving service provider?
