- Summary:
- Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States, was shot dead on the morning of December 4, 2024, in New York. The words "delay" and "depose" were written on the shell casings of the bullets fired, a possible reference to the standard tactics followed by U.S. health insurers to avoid claim payments. This case is about the thousands of unsympathetic and gleeful social media responses to the news of this premeditated murder, as well as overwhelming support for the suspected murderer after his arrest. The case provides information to discuss the possible reasons for such a response, explicitly focusing on underlying drivers like perceptions of unethical and greedy corporate practices. The case asks students to consider potential organizational and regulatory interventions that may be adopted to remedy the situation to change the adverse public perception of the insurance provider.
