- Summary:
- Due to economies of scale in the Minnesota dairy industry, the Zuercher family realized that their dairy farm was no longer competitive. They plan to keep the five acres where the house, barn, outbuildings, garden, and family orchard are located. But they are uncertain what to do with the remaining 430 acres of farmland, where they grew forage crops (i.e., alfalfa, sorghum, and clover) for the dairy cattle. The Zuercher family could sell or lease the land. Or they could partner with a local non-profit committed to regenerative agriculture; when the partnership ends, they could still sell or lease the land. Should they choose to sell, potential buyers include real-estate developers, agricultural conglomerates, or other neighboring farmers. The local non-profit committed to regenerative agriculture was the Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA), devoted to helping Hmong immigrants and Hmong-Americans utilize their agricultural skills in the United States. The financial implications of these options vary. Selling or leasing the land could be a large infusion to the family trust. To work with the HAFA, the Zuerchers would have to defer any plans dependent on the infusion of cash projected from selling or leasing the land. Partnering with the HAFA would not mean the Zuerchers gave up their claim to the land; the HAFA would hold annual leases to the property. This is a fictional family dairy farm.
