Summary:
The 'Netflix Pivot' case examines the lead up to Netflix's most significant financial market crisis (to date) in the Spring of 2022, as the world's largest streaming platform struggled to contend with falling subscriber numbers and rising competition. The case analyses the impact of the changing market conditions resulting from the COVID pandemic, which created an inflated bubble for online leisure and entertainment activity. That bubble burst as the world started to open in 2022 to live, physical events and saw a significant shift in consumer behaviour. Facing rising production costs, heavy borrowing, and challenges to capture customer long-term-value and loyalty in a crowded market, Netflix's management was facing significant strategic choices in a bid to survive and thrive. The case explores the options available to management to address the challenge at that dangerous moment in the company's history of inexorable growth to that point in April 2022.
