Summary:
Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) introduced SimplyGo, an account-based ticketing (ABT) platform, on April 4, 2019, with the ambition of transforming the national public transportation fare payment systems with a seamless digital service for commuters. However, as the use of SimplyGo was not mandatory, about 36% of commuters continued to use alternative transport cards, presumably because they did not see much advantage in switching to the SimplyGo payment system. Hence, despite SimplyGo's innovative design, the system faced significant challenges when the LTA, on January 9, 2024, announced the discontinuation of adult EZ-Link and NETS FlashPay cards on public transport, mandating that all commuters switch to SimplyGo by June 1, 2024. This abrupt policy shift elicited considerable online criticism and concern among users.Singapore's status of having the world's fourth-best transportation system (Dhar, 2023) highlighted the importance of aligning with global standards through initiatives such as SimplyGo. However, the rapid transition to a new payment system has prompted debate over the justification and execution of the decision. The case provides a platform to explore whether the LTA's approach was appropriate given the challenges it encountered. Students can also discuss strategies for mitigating public discontent and enhancing the management of the transition process.
