- Summary:
- In 2022, hospitals in London, England, were struggling to meet the demand for blood. In this fictious case, Drone 4.0, a drone solutions company, was hired by the National Health Service (NHS) to find a solution to blood delivery issues in hospitals across London. The company suggested the usage of drones for urgent delivery orders requested by hospitals to minimize the lead time. This case aims to assess the possibility of drone delivery as a proposed solution to the blood supply chain problem in London, UK. Using a quantitative methodology and a deductive approach, a mathematical model was built to optimize the gap between the supply of blood from NHS centers and the demand for blood from London hospitals. The model considered the minimum time needed to deliver the maximum quantity of blood supplied from the NHS centers to the hospitals in need, highlighting which NHS center would be the fastest to supply for each hospital. The case presents a real problem shared publicly by the NHS, and the solution is presented through a fictional company.
