- Summary:
- Craig Hamilton, an American entrepreneur, led a marketing firm in Myanmar shortly after the nation opened its business frontier to foreign markets in 2016. Craig's reputation as a successful marketing guru gave a comparative advantage to the organization in networking with potential clients. However, within the organization, which continued to expand, Craig was challenged by different perceptions of talent management when it emerged that two key members of his team held distinctly differing approaches to Myanmar politics and culture. In 2021, a few years into its operation, a sudden shift in the political atmosphere in Myanmar further jeopardized the future of the marketing firm's operation. This case describes how the political affiliation of team members, different cultural perspectives and customs, and political instability impacted the organization's practice of talent management. Students will be asked to analyze the managerial strategies employed by Craig Hamilton in navigating the political and cultural challenges in Myanmar using concepts from cross-cultural management.
