- Summary:
- This case study explores the challenges encountered by ABC Limited in implementing its rural sanitation awareness campaign in Palghar and Wada, India. Despite its alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), the initiative faced significant hurdles in achieving its objectives. Community reactions to the campaign were mixed. Some valued its focus on sanitation, while others found it irrelevant. A village elder noted, "They came with good intentions but didn't listen to us first," highlighting a disconnect. Volunteers faced engagement issues, and materials were unsuited to local customs. A health worker pointed out, "The posters were in a language many here don't read easily." A project coordinator admitted, "We didn't anticipate the need for ongoing dialogue."To address these concerns, ABC Limited's corporate social responsibility (CSR) leader restructured the campaign using lessons from the Ramayana, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and sustainability. Community involvement increased, blending traditional knowledge with modern sanitation practices, which built trust. A follow-up survey revealed improved acceptance, with one resident stating, "This time, we felt like partners, not just recipients."The study draws attention to key lessons for effective CSR implementation, including the necessity of assessing and addressing the specific needs of target communities, the role of cultural sensitivity in designing initiatives that resonate locally, and the application of ethical leadership to foster inclusivity and long-term community welfare.
