Summary:
The case discusses financial performance challenges faced by Arlington, Virginia-based Boeing Co (Boeing), led by Robert K. Ortberg (CEO). Boeing has suffered a series of very frequent crises since 2018. First, between 2018 and 2019, Boeing's 737 Max aircraft was involved in two fatal crashes wherein all 346 people on board these aircraft died. After the second crash, Boeing's 737 Max aircraft was grounded by orders from the US Federal Aviation Administration until the company resolved safety issues. However, on January 5, 2024, a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft that Alaska Airlines operated met with a serious incident where a door plug of the plane came off, startling passengers and crew. Then, in September 2024, Boeing workers went on strike. The direct financial impact of the one-month strike was USD 5 billion per day. Further in April 2025, due to tariff wars between China and the US, the Chinese government instructed its airlines not to accept Boeing aircraft that they had previously ordered. In August 2024, Boeing appointed Ortberg as the new CEO, replacing Dave Calhoun. What strategies does Ortberg need to opt for to ensure the survival of Boeing? Can strategic asset rationalization help? How was Boeing able to sustain operations despite so many crises?
