Summary:
In September 2022, Elon Musk became the owner and CEO of Twitter, acquiring the company during a period marked by financial instability and leadership challenges. Many hoped Musk's experience as a successful entrepreneur would lead to a profitable turnaround. However, his controversial handling of layoffs, decisions to cut costs, and provocative public statements-often made via the platform itself-led to further internal disruption and loss of advertiser confidence. In June 2023, Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO, with Twitter rebranded as X a month later. Despite Yaccarino's leadership, Musk's frequent and often divisive activity on social media has continued to draw negative attention to the company, complicating the organization's recovery efforts. This case invites students to critically assess Musk's leadership style and the impact of his continued involvement in X operations. Through the examination of media reports, Musk's public and social media statements, and leadership and organizational culture theories, students will evaluate whether Musk's role is conducive to the long-term success of X. Students will be asked to explore the dynamics between Musk's public persona, his organizational decisions and actions, Yaccarino's leadership, and their implications for the company's future business outcomes.
