Summary:
This Skill will provide readers with an understanding of equality and equity. Equality is treating everyone the same regardless of their identity. Equity is ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to be successful. Both equality and equity are important for organizational leaders. Organizations that practice equality promote fair treatment, but equity goes beyond fair treatment, ensuring that those who may have been historically disadvantaged are offered opportunities for achievement. Equitable treatment is important in creating a culture of belonging. As leaders prepare to interact with a more diverse group of stakeholders, inclusive leaders understand why equitable treatment of employees is important. Equity and equitable practices are a catalyst for inclusion and for retaining historically marginalized and underrepresented individuals. Organizations that only focus on diversity and inclusion may not be creating a culture with policies and procedures that can be met by all members. Often organizations create documents that require employees to participate in diversity initiatives, but these initiatives may not consider the abilities and skills of the workforce, leaving some members unable to comply. Organizations that practice equity are more adaptable and resilient. When they promote respect for lived experience and the elimination of cultural barriers, organizations possess an increased awareness of the challenges caused by marginalized backgrounds. The terms equity and equality are often conflated or viewed as controversial. Businesses seeking equality continually strive to ensure that all members have the same opportunities, yet, for employees who are part of the minority population, equality often falls short. However, businesses that practice equity are better equipped to adapt to employee needs by providing resources associated with individual skill levels, assigning mentors for coaching and development, and creating accessibility for various promotional opportunities. This Skill explores the distinct differences between equality and equity and identifies what leaders can do to create a more equitable environment and themselves practice equitable behaviors. The Skill addresses the questions, why do organizations need to focus on equity, and what are the measurable benefits derived from the transformation to equity. Equity may be lacking in organizations, but there are steps that leaders can take to improve equitable practices. In 2022, Matt Gonzales established a guide for organizations to conduct equity audits, the steps of which include setting goals and getting buy-in, collecting the relevant data, analyzing the data, taking actions to remediate equity issues, and routinely monitoring equity.
