- Summary:
- This Skill will not answer all the questions related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility (DEIBA). However, it will provide an overview of the importance of DEIBA and why embracing DEIBA initiatives is important for organizations and leaders. Embracing DEIBA is an act of the heart to create a culture of belonging. Many organizational leaders view DEIBA as impactful to the organization's bottom line, believing that if they increase their diversity efforts, it will increase their profits or customer base. However, diversity is not about the bottom line; instead, it is about equity-that is, treating all people with fairness in accordance with their unique circumstances. DEIBA initiatives will be successful if leaders focus on more than financial gain. DEIBA should be a value that is embraced at all levels of organizations beginning with top leadership. Thus, contextualizing what DEIBA means to their employees, boards, and stakeholders allows organizational leaders to better lead and serve those groups. In 2021, Forbes Human Resources Council provided 15 key benefits of DEIBA and an explanation of why leaders need to share these benefits with their team. DEIBA efforts increase feelings of safety, respect, and connectedness. When DEIBA initiatives are implemented correctly, employees begin to feel a sense of belonging. In addition, inclusion creates a sense of psychological safety, and organizations that are inclusive and have a culture of belonging are more apt to retain employees. DEIBA is about accountability. Every person is accountable for not only their actions and behaviors but also the actions and behaviors of others. Recognizing that everyone starts at a unique place, individuals should strive to create a balance through their actions so that they will be accountable to self and others.
