Summary:
You have probably heard in the news or around the kitchen table some discussion of equity and diversity initiatives. But what are they? In essence, these initiatives are intended to ensure that all people in a particular organization feel included and respected. Imagine that all your work colleagues are in a group chat on Microsoft Teams, but you're not in it. Taking it further, imagine that they're talking about going to a concert, but you were never invited. They are staying together and sitting in the same section. You like this singer and were thinking about going. Had you known that your colleagues liked this singer and were making plans to attend, you would have loved to have been included. Or imagine that you always hear your colleagues leaving for lunch on Fridays because your office is right down the hall. Hoping for an invite, you leave your door open just in case they decide to extend the invitation one day. They walk past your office, laughing and excited to go to lunch, and still don't speak to you. You weren't invited to join the "Friday lunch squad," so you not only feel excluded but also missed out on a great lunch and a chance to get to know your colleagues outside the office. These two examples may seem inconsequential initially, but over time these interactions can affect a person's sense of belonging and leave them feeling undervalued, unappreciated, and excluded. Most of us do not like being left out of conversations, group luncheons, events, meetings, or consideration for promotions. Now let's take a look at a more serious example. Throughout this Skill, we're going to look at how to plan and implement diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility (DEIBA) initiatives at ABC Oil, a fictional oil company that drills and refines oil for markets in North America and Europe. Imagine that you're the only female on the operations and maintenance team at ABC Oil with years of experience in several areas. Imagine that you have applied for a senior-level position several times and have gotten passed over repeatedly for your less experienced male counterparts. You struggle to stay motivated as you try to compete in a male-dominated industry that constantly overlooks your talent. As the business world develops, people expect equal treatment and opportunity in the workplace regardless of their background or identity. No one deserves to feel isolated, alone, or passed over at work. So how can a company save a great hire from leaving over something as simple as a concert invite or lunch invitation? What about something more serious, such as being wrongfully passed over for a promotion? How do you avoid costly employee turnover? How do we make sure that an employee feels like they belong on the first day and the years that follow? How do we create a workplace where everyone can excel and propel the company forward? I'll tell you how: successful companies must understand the importance and value of DEIBA.
