- Summary:
- In this Skill, you will have an opportunity to understand how formal workplace equity programs evolved, the current forms they tend to take, and what experts have learned about effective and ineffective diversity training practices. Not everyone has benefitted equally from existing equity programs, and we will explore some of the gaps and current hot topics in this area. This includes the need for improved supports for people who experience multiple or unique forms of discrimination due to having multiple stigmatized identities (e.g., being both a person with a disability and being a gender minority within a highly gendered workplace, and being a member of a visible minority group who is also part of the LGBTQIA+ community). We will explore some equity-seeking groups whose needs may require special attention in the current political and social context, including Indigenous peoples, visible minority immigrants, people who are transgendered, and people who are neurodiverse. Organizational interventions to address their needs will be discussed. Later in the Skill, you will have the opportunity to explore four broad types of workplaces that currently pose special challenges for diversity management. They include highly gendered workplaces, particularly those historically dominated by toxic masculinity cultures; service industries that require direct customer interaction, particularly hospitality; industries that are highly appearance and celebrity focused, such as media and entertainment; and occupations for which elite social capital and privilege are key advantages, such as academe and entrepreneurship. In addition to discussing organizational interventions, we will discuss how to be an effective ally to others in these types of workplaces, even when you do not have decision-making or policy development power. Finally, we will end with a discussion about how to convince key decision makers of the business and moral benefits of fostering and supporting a diverse workforce.
