- Summary:
- The Standard began as an evening paper on 21 May 1827. James Johnstone acquired it in March 1857 and soon turned it into a morning paper, bringing it into competition with The Times. The evening edition was revived in 1860 as The Evening Standard. William Mudford became business editor in 1873 and manager from 1878-99. Davidson Dalziel purchased The Standard in 1910 and closed it in March 1916. The Evening Standard, purchased by Edward Hulton Jr., continues publishing today.
