- Summary:
- "As a handbook on international peace and security, it aims not only to define international peace but also to shed light on the evolution of the concept and capture the contemporary debates surrounding it. The handbook offers insights in conjunction with the principal concerns about international security and the prevalent sense of insecurity amongst nations at the global stage. The race to procure arms and the stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction have further ignited the debate on the notion of security. The military alliances, both past and present, such as NATO, SEATO, Warsaw Pact, etc., are some of the prime examples that point towards a vacuum of insecurity, which makes it imperative to discuss the demand for international peace. The handbook aims to discuss the theories of security and conflict as well as the ever-growing significance of international peace in the world. The individual chapters of this handbook present recent developments and debates around the notions of security and insecurity, focusing on some of the nation states as case studies. It could be viewed as a medium to further enhance our understanding of the reasons behind humanitarian crises and conflicts, e.g., in Afghanistan post-withdrawal of US forces and the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war. When it comes to maintaining security, this handbook will discuss contemporary factors behind interstate conflicts as well as the role of non-state actors in terrorism, cyber attacks, bio-terrorism, and trafficking in narcotics. In light of the continuous evolution of the threats to international security, governments across the globe have been constantly developing their strategies and countermeasures. The book chapters will present the recent trends and developments concerning the above issues and further explore the avenues for the creation of and support for peace. Since peace and security have been interpreted and developed by academic disciplines across the spectrum, this handbook would offer an assemblage of ideas and studies from a multi-disciplinary orientation. The handbook is broadly divided into eleven sections, and each section consists of a minimum of four chapters. The first section will set out the foundation of the book, in which the chapters strive to introduce the key terms used in the book to the readers. The second section features the key concepts and approaches to international security. The third section highlights the major actors and participants in international peace. The fourth section presents the latest forms and variants of conflict and insecurity. The fifth section explores the definition of peace through the lens of different disciplines in the academic world. The sixth section discusses the role of international organizations and institutions in ensuring international security in addition to exploring those institutions that add fuel to the fire and escalate the conflict quotient. The seventh section presents a realistic version of global peace in the form of case studies from different continents. The eighth section presents multiple approaches to conflict resolution and mediation. The ninth section tracks the challenges to international security from diverse quarters. The tenth section stitches together the terms and concepts of peace-building and peace-keeping through nation-building. The handbook concludes with the eleventh section, in which the chapters attempt to foresee the threats to international peace in the following years of the 21st century and the future road to mitigate and neutralize the threats"-- Home page
