- Working with medicines is central to the nursing role. It forms the basis of most treatment plans and is fundamental to modern practice. In order for nurses to provide safe and effective care it is important that they understand what common drugs are for, how they work in the body and what it means for the people using them. Nurses have access to vast amounts of information on all of the drugs licenced for use in the UK but there is a need for resources that focus on the basics and provide a level of detail suitable for the role. The book blends the benefits of the textbook format with the practical utility of reference information provided by sources like the British National Formulary (BNF). Chapters follow a two part structure: the initial section takes a traditional textbook approach providing clear explanations of the drugs while also emphasising the wider nursing context; the second half of the chapter provides a medicines list that details all the key facts and figures relating to the main drugs in use including information on dosages, brand names and possible side effects. Over recent years we have seen a significant increase in the amount of bioscience taught on the nursing degree with the NMC now mandating that students are adequately prepared for future prescribing roles. In response, curriculums now include far more teaching time devoted to pharmacology and medicines which should increase the strength of what was already a very solid market segment.
