Chroniqueur apprécié pour son ironie souriante et sa fantaisie, puis romancier, c’est au théâtre qu’il triompha : La Veine rencontra, en 1901, un énorme succès et fit de lui le dramaturge à la mode, célébré à la fois pour sa légèreté pleine d’esprit et son observation lucide des mœurs contemporaines. Élu à l’Académie française en 1914, rédacteur en chef au Figaro de 1914 à 1920, il fut salué, à sa mort en 1922, comme l’incarnation de l’esprit français.Désireux de rendre justice à cet écrivain ignoré par l’histoire littéraire, le présent ouvrage s’attache à restituer les grandes lignes de la vie et de la carrière de Capus, mais aussi à replacer ses écrits, chroniques et pièces de théâtre en particulier, dans le champ littéraire de leur époque. Now largely forgotten, Alfred Capus was a luminary of the Belle Époque. A columnist appreciated for his gentle irony and whimsical style, and later a novelist, it was in the theater that he truly triumphed: La Veine (The Vein) was a resounding success in 1901, making him the most fashionable playwright, celebrated for both his witty and lighthearted humor and his insightful observations of contemporary mores. Elected to the Académie Française in 1914, and editor-in-chief of Le Figaro from 1914 to 1920, he was hailed upon his death in 1922 as the very embodiment of the French spirit.Desiring to do justice to this writer neglected by literary history, this book aims to reconstruct the main outlines of Capus's life and career, and also to situate his writings, particularly his columns and plays, within the literary landscape of their time.
