- Alexandre Dumas's celebrated "Valois Trilogy" (Le cycle des Valois) is a political and romantic saga of the French Valois court. Volume I, Pléiade Volume N° 685, includes a general introduction, an author chronology, and a specific critical essay by Sylvain Ledda titled "Écrire en collaboration: Alexandre Dumas et Auguste Maquet", which explores Dumas's collaborative writing process with Maquet. La Reine Margot, the complete text of the first novel in the trilogy, covers the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre and the end of Charles IX's reign. A Contextual Dossier, Autour de "La Reine Margot", features historical documents and source material utilized by the authors. La Dame de Monsoreau, Books I to III includes the first three parts of the second novel in the cycle, which transitions the narrative into the reign of Henri III. Appendices include historically relevant prefaces and a "Lettre parisienne" by Delphine de Girardin. Because La Dame de Monsoreau is too extensive to fit into a single Pléiade edition alongside La Reine Margot, it is split. To read the complete trilogy, this book pairs directly with Volume II, Pléiade Volume N° 686, which contains the final two parts of La Dame de Monsoreau, Books IV and V, followed by the third novel in the Valois Trilogy, Les Quarante-cinq.
