Summary:
"The history of East Central and Eastern Europe, in all of its richness and diversity, is still poorly understood by the general public. The last decades have seen a growing interest in the history of this part of the world, especially since the extension of the European Union to include several states of the former Eastern Block. The tragic events currently unfolding in Ukraine have unexpectedly brought this part of the world at the centre of attention in international news, with a thirst for understanding its history and cultures. Moreover, medieval history has long played an important role in the historical consciousness of the peoples of East Central and Eastern Europe, which has again tragically been seen recently in the revived ideologies connecting Ukraine and Russia through a perceived medieval past. Most nation-states of modern East Central and Eastern Europe have been built on constructed historical narratives going back to the earliest mentions of ethnic groups or to the earliest attestations of national languages, which are invariably rooted in the Middle Ages. The history - and archaeology - of medieval East Central and Eastern Europe is thus of crucial importance not only to a proper understanding of the diversity and complexity of medieval Europe, but also of modern societies, cultures, and histories. Appropriate tools to teach in approachable manner the history of this important part of Europe at the undergraduate level are, unfortunately, still fully lacking."-- Provided by publisher.
