The last decades have seen a growing interest in the history of this part of the world, especially since the extension of the European Union to include several states of the former Eastern Block. The tragic events currently unfolding in Ukraine have unexpectedly brought this part of the world at the centre of attention in international news, with a thirst for understanding its history and cultures. Moreover, medieval history has long played an important role in the historical consciousness of the peoples of East Central and Eastern Europe, which has again tragically been seen recently in the revived ideologies connecting Ukraine and Russia through a perceived medieval past.
