- While developing the history of the Chesapeake Western Railway, this manuscript culminates with the results of historical archaeological research at the industrial community of Stokesville which developed at its end-of-track, and the rich mountain resources that fed it. In order to interpret the physical and spatial evidence recovered, the technologies and practices basic to its existence are considered. These include: tan bark harvesting and extraction, late 19th century lumbering, coal exploration, narrow- and standard gauge railroad construction and maintenance, etc. Specifically, this publication presents the results of research conducted between 1966-1968 by JMU on behalf of GW&JNF. Using multiple strategies, the document introduces and explores the industrial and entrepreneurial activities that exploited and altered the local terrain and culminated in the construction of the Chesapeake Western Railway and the Stokesville "boom." -- from Introduction
