- Summary:
- "While the naming of the Mass in B minor as 'The Great Catholic Mass' in the Bach household can thus be plausibly explained, the multifaceted meaning of the term 'Catholic' in Bach's time is a different matter entirely. Reiner Marquard addresses this far more complex topic in the present book. His line of reasoning, based on the Latin Creed, specifically the article 'Et unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam ecclesiam' (And one holy Catholic and apostolic Church), is significantly guided by writings from Bach's theological library. These writings focus not on Bach the musician, but rather on Bach the man, whose understanding of the theological content of his reading also shaped his musical language. In this sense, Reiner Marquard's book makes a substantial contribution to understanding the extraordinary depth of Bach's sacred music." (From the foreword by Christoph Wolff)
