Summary:
The book differs from anything published so far because it focuses on Latin America, especially Cuba, Argentina and Brazil. The main focus is on the Brazilian context, which differs substantially from Cuba and Argentina because of the much lower intellectual density and absence of universities proper at the time. The research is based on thus far almost unexplored documents, such as those relating to the tour through Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil of members of the so-called Lombroso School in 1907 and 1910. These historical documents are interpreted and presented through an anthropologist´s eye, which makes the book more readable and, in many ways, contemporary.
