Summary:
"In spite of all of the focus on at-risk youth, there are parts of the puzzle relative to Black males that we are missing-and we aim to explore them in this book, and offer tips to classroom teachers to help them uncover their own truths about Black male students in science. The author believes that there are deeper, more complicated reasons for certain behaviors that occur in the school setting by these young men. Perceptions of teachers, the stereotype threat, hopelessness, personal performance, and discipline all play a role in their behavior relative to science academic performance; this book will look at these issues in more depth and provide practical suggestions for encouraging Black male students with respect to these issues. Based on the author's research how Black male's perceive hope influences their performance in science. This book addresses ways to use what the author has termed the Hope Theory--fostering hope among Black males to increase their identity and agency as scientists--and how students can use their self-perceptions regarding hope by pathways and agency thinking to increase performance in science. This book will help educators to identify the levels of hope in students. This in turn can inform the pedagogy, praxis, and policy used to engage and motivate them. It will provide educators with specific strategies useful in enhancing the hope of Black male students. Furthermore, by enhancing the hope of Black male students, there are implications for increasing the performance of Black male students in science (and thereby increasing the number of Black men who go on to study science in higher education and pursue careers in science)"-- Provided by publisher.
