Biography/History:

Mario Carreño (La Habana, 1913-Santiago de Chile, 1999) was a painter, draftsman, art critic, and professor who taught at the New School for Social Research in New York and co-founded the School of Art at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 1959. His training began at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro in Cuba and continued in Spain and France, and his work is held in museums in Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, and the United States; he became a Chilean national in 1969 and received the Premio Nacional de Arte in 1982.
