- A classic socio-historical study of the relationship between education and social structure in Argentina from the consolidation of the liberal oligarchic state in 1880 to the mid-twentieth century. Drawing on statistics, policy documents, and critical theory, Tedesco analyzes how schooling was shaped by economic modernization, class formation, and political projects, examining such issues as the role of the State, the expansion of public and private education, conflicts with the Catholic Church, and the construction of a national school system through normal schools. The later chapters and annex extend the analysis to the crisis of oligarchic hegemony, the rise of middle sectors, import-substitution industrialization, and the tensions between authoritarian and democratizing pedagogical models. This new UNIPE edition brings together the original book, subsequent essays, and an additional study on education between 1930 and 1955, framing the work’s long-term impact through contemporary introductory texts and collective prologues.
