The novel came as an emotional response and a literary cry in the face of this tragic scene, drawing from the details of daily life under bombardment and from images of ruin and bloodshed the threads of the story from which its events were woven. Its characters the child, the mother, the two sisters, and the resistance fighter, though shaped in part by artistic imagination, are mirrors of thousands of real stories lived by the people there.
