Summary:

Joy Wellbeloved (James), together with *Marlene and *Michael started the Phoenix Society in 1985. At the time (conservative, 1980s South Africa) the society was aimed at providing a way for (white) men who dressed in women's clothing to connect with each other. 'Transgender' was at the time not used as a description, although members ranged from transvestites and drag queens to what would today be considered transgender. The Phoenix Society published a quarterly publication called Fanfare from 1985-1997. Joy, as secretary of this society, was a regular contributor and much of her story is told through the articles she wrote for Fanfare. Joy did ultimately have gender-reassignment surgery and lived and worked as a woman in Cape Town from the late 1990s. The collection consists primarily of issues of Fanfare, the official journal of the Phoenix Society for the South African and worldwide transgendered and cross-dressing community, as well as other publications of the Phoenix Society. It also includes Joy Wellbeloved's life story, press articles about her, the Phoenix Society and about Michael/Michelle Evert and interviews conducted with her.
