Biography/History:

Mary Capper (1755-1845) was an English convert to the Society of Friends who corresponded extensively with fellow Quaker abolitionists Mary Morris Knowles, Elizabeth Fry, and Richard Tapper Cadbury, among others. From 1794 to 1825 Capper pursued a vocation as a traveling minister, after which she retired to Birmingham (where she had first settled in 1816) until her death.

All were sold by Edmund Fry (Hounsditch, London): seventeen in conjunction with Harvey & Darton (55 Gracechurch St., London) and E. Albright (Newington Causeway; London); six in conjunction with Harvey & Darton only; and two by Fry alone.

None of the pamphlets is dated, although 12 contain material dated between 1785 and 1825 (bulk 1820-1825). Mary Capper's autograph on the front free endpaper gives a terminus ante quem for publication of 1826. The Camberwell Press operated 1823-1832; see J.B.G. Vogel's BBTI entries. Booksellers Harvey & Darton and Edmund Fry both did business within this range; see their BBTI entries. Bookseller E. Albright is said by BBTI to have operated 1839-1846, but she appears in London directories not consulted by BBTI beginning in 1830. Capper's autograph may indicate an even earlier start in business.

Each pamphlet consists of 4 pages. Two ("Comfort and happiness of being flogged" and "To every one who uses sugar") are illustrated on page 1.
