- Summary:
- Traditional intervention research involves recruitment, testing, data collection, analysis, and evaluation of some conditional change between or within groups. However, sometimes, broad policy changes paired with regular data collection procedures allow researchers to evaluate natural intervention experiments. Our case study reflects on the procedures used by a research team to examine the impact of an alternate-pathway-to-licensure programs on the service times of ethnically diverse participants. The case study walks through the research team's observation of anecdotal situations and literature to develop a research question. Do alternative pathway-to-licensure programs help to retain special education teachers in the classroom? The case study also walks through the process of obtaining and merging data sets, defining and preparing the variables, and analyzing and reflecting on the results. Procedurally, the team elected to use a time-to-event methodology which involved two steps. First, censor the data to adjust for individuals entering the observation window at different times using a Kaplan Meir estimate (1958), and second, analyze the data with visual analysis and hypothesis testing. Additionally, the authors reflect on the opportunities for mentorship during the research process.
