- Summary:
- The open-science movement involves researchers making their research plans and materials open and accessible to the scientific community. The goal of open science is to ensure that research findings are both valid and replicable. This case study begins with a discussion of the rationale for open-science practices. The reader is then introduced to an empirical study conducted in collaboration with an undergraduate student that implemented open-sciences practices. The study aims to replicate and extend a previous study that reported that completing a positive psychology course improved students' subjective well-being. This case study discusses some open-science best practices such as preregistration of your study plan and ensuring accessibility to your study's materials. Common concerns of open science are that it is a burdensome, time-consuming, and inflexible process. Using this case study, I show that open-science practices do not imply that researchers cannot deviate from their preregistration plan. Furthermore, I describe how open science is not an onerous process. On the contrary, open science can make the research process easier by providing a structure for the researcher's paper. By the end of this case study, readers should gain an appreciation for open-science practices that can be incorporated into all research agendas because they contribute to creating a more robust, replicable, and trustworthy science.
